Post post post - yay!

Woohoo - things are looking up even though I am sad about the Eldar book.  Still - There is hope so will see.  I don't play them cuz I like to keep friends hahaha.

Let's get with a paint list

Me
Most likely nothing - unless I want to paint up a different guy to complete the SW/DA thing - more chat later
BoLS article - maybe Eldar related?  Maybe how the Meta might shift.

Greg
2 Sets of Cents done
Scout Storm - Need to build
Scouts themselves need to build and paint too

Luis
Storm Raven fix/paint etc number 2
Maybe built a drop pod and hate life

Alan
Chaos FW Land Raider - need to get it soaking this week

Chris C
Has some Dark Eldar to do - Coven style!

Christian
6 Plague Drones whenever they come in

Woot this will help get some finances in check haha.  If I can finish some stuff.  I got a bump at work so that will help when it starts up.  Trying to get another move up so will see.  Will see!  Babies are expensive.

I don't want to get into a pity party on the Eldar book so instead let's go into the something I played with this last weekend at an Event.  I went 2-1 (last game was a tie but we didn't do the tertiary mission so I gave it to the guy so he could win).

Played the DA/SW list I wrote about before.  I preformed really well with the only thing being I only rolled one decent power during the entire game - invisibility once and most of the time I didn't get the spells or forgot to throw to Force or shrouding.  It makes me think it might work better to just have more muscle in the form of dual chaplains and dual WgBL's.  It is simpler, I don't forget spells, and lets me crush things.

Rd 1 - Mike with White Scars plus BA.  Bikes, Command, BA Drop pods with lots of Melta.  I scouted up first, tried to get first blood - failed and then survived the response.  Then I got involved in killing things and left Mike with drop pods on turn 4.  We called it from there.  Mikes army was painted really well and it was fun playing painted vs painted.  Mike hasn't gotten revenge on me yet and I expect some beatings to come from him soon - either at Alamo GT or Wargames Con.

Rd 2- Robert aka Ricky Bobby.  He was playing AM with a Knight.  Vulture, vendetta, some Chimeras and guys.  Turn 3 I had killed the Knight and all the chimeras.  He called it from there as I was about to remove all the foot dudes and start chasing down flyers with TWL plasma in the butt.  Full points for me.

Rd 3 - Local Damien with Necron Decurion.  This was a rough match as we showed the issues with the missions by not letting Ties get any points.  It ended up with me getting First Blood, Line Breaker and him getting Warlord and Line Breaker.  It would have been a 2 v 2 tie and taken us both out of the game.  The key to losing was failing 2 hit and runs in a row.   If I could have gotten out I would have killed at least 2-3 more squads to put me ahead on the primary which was Kill Points.

All in all this was a good test for the army.  It feels like a good fit in the ATC/ETC style format where you can let it prey on specific builds.  I don't know how it would do come the Eldar Apocalypse but scouting up and getting in close can mean death to the bikers.  It might be worth it to either change it up and add in Marines to get Loth or if the event allows 3 sources do something insane like this.

SM CAD/DA Ally/SW Champs Detachment

HQ: Loth
Troops: Scouts X 5
Troops: Scouts X 5

DA Ally
HQ: Chaplain, Bike, Auspex, Melta Bombs
HQ: Ravenwing Command Squad X 5, Apoc, Grenade Launcher, Ravenwing Banner
Troops: Scouts X 5

SW Champ Detachment
HQ: WGBL, Thunder Wolf, PF, Shield, Runic Armor
HQ: WGBL, Thunder Wolf, PF, Shield, Runic Armor
HQ: Rune Priest, Bike, Lvl 2, Runic, Melta Bombs,
Elite: Iron Priest, Thunder Wolf, Cyber Wolves X 4
Elite: Iron Priest, Thunder Wolf, Cyber Wolves X 4
Elite: Iron Priest, Thunder Wolf, Cyber Wolves X 4
Elite: Iron Priest, Thunder Wolf, Cyber Wolves X 4

I got like 15 pts left I could do something dumb with I think - but this sure looks dumb right?  And no Centurions so I am nice right?

I still might play the big fat unit for Alamo GT.  Something just seems interesting to get a huge unit of nonsense coming at you.

DA CAD plus Company of the Great Wolf
HQ: Interrogator-Chaplain, Displacer Field, PF, Bike
HQ: Librarian, Bike, Displacer Field, Force Axe, Auspex, Meltabomb, Lvl 2
HQ: Ravenwing Command Squad X 5, Ravenwing Banner, Grenade Launcher
Troops: Scout Squad X 5, Camo Cloaks
Troops: Scout Squad X 5, Camo Cloaks

HQ: WGBL, Thunder Wolf, PF, Shield, Runic Armor
HQ: WGBL, Thunder Wolf, PF, Shield, Runic Armor
HQ: Rune Priest, Bike, Lvl 2, Runic, Melta Bombs
Elite: Iron Priest, Thunder Wolf, Cyber Wolves X 4
Elite: Iron Priest, Thunder Wolf, Cyber Wolves X 4
Elite: Iron Priest, Thunder Wolf, Cyber Wolves X 4
Elite: Iron Priest, Thunder Wolf, Cyber Wolves X 4

One huge super unit cuz I give no Effs!

Still thinking of the Khorne thingie.  I know 3 Grinders will be Key to any list I run - I just need to figure out how to get everything else I want.

HQ: Khorne Lord, Jugger, Sigil, PF, Lit Claw
HQ: Khorne Lord, Jugger, Sigil, PF, Lit Claw
Troops: Bloodletters X 8, Blood Reaper
Troops: Bloodletters X 8, Blood Reaper
FA: Heldrake, Bale Flamer
FA: Heldrake, Bale Flamer
FA: Flesh Hounds X 15
Heavy: Soul Grinder, Baleful Torrent
Heavy: Soul Grinder, Baleful Torrent
Heavy: Soul Grinder, Baleful Torrent

Chaos Space Marine Allies
HQ: Chaos Lord, MoK, Juggernaut, Axe of Blind Fury, Sigil, Meltabombs, Gift of Mutation
Troops: Cultists X 10

I could go with a different Chaos Lord set up as I have the points.  Daemonheart might be good.  Heck there are others too.  It is a thought.  This seems ok as it has 3 jugger lords coming at you - enough dragons to cause issues and you can keep your guys safer maybe.  Maybe haha.  I wonder if will see just 3-4 Grinders plus Heldrakes with the Slaughter Cult plus CAD?  Or just a shit ton of Grinders.

I still see 2 units of Centurions being the standard.  Heck I bet you could do some nonsense with Sentinals of Terra if you wanted to find ways to get pods in all of them.  Here is a dumb idea using just 2.

Sentinels of Terra

HQ: Libbie, Lvl 2, Auspex, Force Axe
HQ: Libbie, Lvl 2, Auspex, Force Axe
Elites: Centurion Devs X 3, Grav Cannon + Amp X 3, Omni Scope
Elites: Centurion Devs X 3, Grav Cannon + Amp X 3, Omni Scope
Troops: Scouts X 10, Meltabomb
Troops: Scouts X 10, Meltabomb
Heavy: Centurion Devs X 3, Grav Cannon + Amp X 3, Omni Scope
Heavy: Centurion Devs X 3, Grav Cannon + Amp X 3, Omni Scope

Flesh Tearers Strike Force
HQ: Libbie, Lvl 2, Auspex, Force Axe
HQ: Libbie, Lvl 2, Auspex, Force Axe
Troops: Scouts X 5, Meltabomb
FA: Drop Pod
FA: Drop Pod
FA: Drop Pod
FA: Drop Pod

That's 4 Pods of Centurions - don't think bikes can live through that.  Plus you have 8 WC dice to throw stupid stuff in and maybe stop a spell too.  And boy doesn't that look dumb?

Onto the hobby aspects I like.

For a BoLS article at some point, I will admit I'm curious as to the sorts of lists you'd put together for a Highlander format. Is it something that's not common in your local meta, or just something not to your taste?

I've written a few and I always find them interesting. I feel it makes you think outside the box etc. If you allow multiple sources you should be able to get a combo like format going which isn't bad.

I wonder if someone made a big deal Highlander style tournament/format you could sell it as a circuit style game etc. Could be interesting - ala some of the Magic formats.

Giant one-unit Wolfstars are scary. For my final game at Tabletop, I had to fight the guy with 3 TWC HQs and 4 TWC Iron Priests and a rune priest biker and Loth, with extra wolves everywhere. Had to pull out all the stops to hold it at bay and keep it off the objective in the middle of the board.

On the subject of daemonkin, I'm surprised you have so much love for the Khorne grinders... I found even my slaanesh ones were too slow for my liking! Why not cheap ass Maulerfiends and put the spare points into a gorepack or something?

Thomas aka Goatboy said...

It's because you need the muscle and anti air at times. I am thinking running 5 in the Slaugher Cult thing - with 3 being big blasts and 2 being deep striking flamers might work.

Trust me I love the maulerfiend - but with Eldar packing so much str 6 it might just be better to have the grinder.

Man I hope there is a Slaanesh Daemonkin book - call it the Creepy Touch Daemons.

I agree Thomas. Slaanesh Daemonkin would be amazing. I was looking through the second edition Chaos book and realized how much the Khorne one is a throwback. I hope they follow the 2nd edition Slaanesh mechanic - summoning points for failures on morale, fear, etc. There would be really cool synergy with the telepathy table, the noise marine pinning weapons, Eldar being at a lower LD for Fear tests, etc. It would be a really fun, fresh way to play the game...cause tests everywhere, and lower the veil between reality and the Warp as Slaanesh tastes their fear...

That the issue - what would it actually be? I mean... let's say Tzeentch is all about casting Tzeentch spells - because if it was just spells - summoning more units by summoning more units is not balanced.

So Tzeentch - spells from the Tzeentch books etc - building up points that way -

Nurgle - killing stuff and losing stuff - it fits

Slaanesh - breaking or leadership checks? That is harder as fearless doesn't give a crap - so then it isn't happening etc - so we have to think of something simpler - not sure what really - might be easier to add in spells of slaanesh or killing units.

We just know a Tzeentch Daemonkin will be coming out so we just have to wait and see.

What are your thoughts on allying in Black Legion for 2 armours with eternal warrior?

Thomas aka Goatboy said...

Maybe - it gets expensive with getting it on a jugger guy - he starts to hit 235 pts - which is pretty expensive. But still - you got to do all 4 wounds dammit.
