Woohoo - Rested from Wargames a bit


Just built some models - getting new Ork army ready and figuring out what the hell I want to play for the ATC. Yup I am going to that in a few weeks - got my plane tickets and everything. I am more excited about seeing people instead of playing - especially with 2 weeks of 6th edition ready, breaking, and tweaking.

Right now I am looking at allies - but most likely the second force org at 2k will be the big culprit as some of the newer armies will just have more options when they can fill out more force org. I think most people are looking at either too expensive options with allies or other things that won't really help them. Of course will have to see when the book itself comes out. I am excited about using CSM with Daemons as I think Daemons might get a nice boost with Fateweaver giving CSM a nice kick in the butt.

Really I think the strongest thing in allies will be those that are very very friendly with each other. That way you can pass off abilities across the table. So will see.

Wargamescon was bad ass. I sold off two armies and some models as well as a bunch of bags. Will get them in a post later on this week. Hell hopefully some new art too - in fact that is the plan for today - art stuff!

Looks like I might be working this weekend on Sunday. So I might have a huge amount of time painting guys. Will see. I still want to get my ork army done - at least the big stuff and then I can add more guys. I need to get 1 Dakka Jet done and 3-6 more Killa Kans.

At the ATC I am scheduled to play Grey Knights. Not sure what kind of list I want to throw down with - I am feeling something odd as I think it will just be more fun for me to throw dice. Will see. It will probably be a Draigo thing designed to mitigate Kill Points plus give me lots of movement. Will write up the list and start to mess with it in the coming weeks. Plus it means I can play with my Monkey Dreadknight haha.

I could drop the Tank bustas for lootas and get red paint on all the Dakkajets if the rule works that allows me to get a 4+ by going 13. I don't think it is supposed to work that way but who the hell knows right? I think it doesn't work because for all intents and purposes you count as moving 12 according to the Ork Codex. You just happen to go 13 instead of 12 but count as going 12.

Blargh - Wargames con is this next weekend so expect a big post on bag art coming. As well as showing people the shirt I designed for the con. Woohoo!

Blargh - I posted some dice thoughts on the rules I am goofing around with. Of course with the rules comes whatever nonsense I think up for a webcomic idea. Some kind of weird western/post apocolpytic/etc thing. I am also up for those and it would be fun to do. Did a doodle for a "mainish" character. Will see if I contine along those lines and complete it. I keep wanting to start it - do a page or two a week and just see if I can at least get enought to put a book together.

That is the biggest thing with this painting models for people stuff. It really eats into my art time. But again the issue is I need it to make sure life moves well enough with bills. I need to make a few more dollars an hour and I can look at limiting what I do and just going back to painting 10 hrs a week instead of the 20+ I do now. It feels like I am doing school all over again haha. Mix that with weekly BOLS articles, Plastic Dudesmen, and whatever nonsense I do here and it becomes a lot of days spent trying to catch up. Lucky for me my Wife likes to do art stuff so we can sit and do art stuff together.

I am going to get that Ork list together. In fact I drew up a graphic for my - Goatboy Returns to Orks for a few months - I just need to color it up. Right now the list looks like this - edited a ton of times to make it look less Goatboy and more - well look awesome on the table top.

Lots of avenues for conversions on the Killa Kans. In fact I think they will end up having a ton of Necron weapons. I got one Warphead done - plan on using that new Savage Ork Warboss as the other. The one up there is from Avatars of War. Will see if this list still survives in 6th. I think it will be fun as I zoom around going dakka dakka.

I bet I do a bunch more - but it depends on what I get done this weekend. Will see - I got Sunday to bust out a ton of stuff. Katie is off today and Saturday so I will be hanging out with her as well as trying to get some small things done.

Ok now onto my game - the thoughts etc.

Talking with a coworker/buddy of mine I started working on the dice mechanic to get things to work. I originally thought up this combat system that is designed for both players to "fight" with their dice rolls to try and win/hit etc. But before that let's talk about the basic stats of the models.

Models have 3 main stats. This is done on purpose to be easy and simple - with extra rules coming from equipment/options for the characters.

Attack - How well they hit at whatever they do. This is for both Melee and shooting. Basically your attack is the basic amount of dice you roll when competing with your opponent.

Defense - This is how many dice your roll when you are competing against your opponents rolls. This can be used to dodge shooting attacks, melee, magic, etc. This is the basic state to get the hell out of the way of damage.

Health - How many hits you can take. Pretty simple and basic.

This is pretty simple and kept that way to ensure the game is easy to understand. Each model has those 3 stats and then has rules that can utilize those stats. So with that in mind let's go into how it all works.

Let's say both guys are fighting each other. When getting assaulted you can decide to do multiple things based on what equipment/skills you might have. To give you an idea here are some of the basic thoughts I had.

Shoot - You can shoot at the opponent as they charge. Roll you attack versus their defense. If kill them before they get there then no further actions are done. If you don't you are not able to roll your defense versus their attack to see if you don't get hit.

Defensive stance - You can roll your defense versus their attack. You win the combat you take no damage.

Attack back - You roll their Attack versus their Attack. If you win you do damage.

So let's now say Steve is the one charging Mike. A charge gives you one extra dice to roll against your opponent. You take the amount of attacks you have, plus whatever bonuses and roll all those dice together (d6's).

So Steve has 4 attacks base plus 1 for the charge. Steve rolls 5 Dice when they attack.

Angry Mike can attack back if he wants or he can try to dodge out of the way. His defense is low so most likely he will just want to punch back in whatever way he can. He takes 5 dice and rolls them versus the opponent.

Steve rolls a 6,5,3,2,1 - you always drop the 1's and 2's as they always miss.

Mike rolls a 5,5,4,3,1 - you always drop the 1's and the 2's as they always miss.

You set the dice up with the highest to the lowest and compare the two.

653 - Steve
5543 - Mike

Steve wins 1.
Mike wins 2 and thus Mike wins the combat and does damage.

The idea is to create a system that allows both players, even those not going first, a full set of options. This way it never feels like you just lost on one dice roll instead of getting a chance to at least compete.

I have been messing with the dice system and want to make sure it works or at least isn't copied somewhere. I don't think it will work for a large scale game as that many dice rolls could be a problem but on a small skirmish based game it might work out.

But really I want to make sure the core thoughts work and then from there try to break it. But that is where the initial thoughts are hittin right now. Tell me if it sounds interesting or not.

I made it back ok!

FTW Games was great as usual - in fact this post will be a big one with art bags. Woohhoo.

The tournament was fun as well at FTW. I played 3 decent games. I have continued my ability to not roll a 4+ with me hitting like 25% of my 4+ saves on my BW throughout the weekend. I played a test game versus Paul Murphy who easily chewed up the wagons with his IG. I couldn't roll and even running over a Chimera I just blue off the weapon when I penned it 3 times.

I think this means I need to just make my ork horde and leave it at that. Currently this is the plan - I got some random Avatars of War figures to be my Weird Boyz.

Will see how it works as I mess with it. I got some crazy quick painting to do this week - 52 Termagaunts and other nonsense that I might not have time to get all my jets done and build all the jerks for the army. I am planning on it but you never know. It sounds fun and I think that many guys painted on the table top is pretty neat. Hell I might jus do the whole army in Yellow to make for a really cohesive force on the table top. And to have people call me crazy for playing that many orks. Shit I might just do that.

Ok that is it for now - I am tired and I know this weekend is going to be filled with house work, terrain work, and whatever else. It is just going to be one of those weeks.
