Goatboy - Lord can we stop with the Man Sword Waving?

Seriously, it is getting tiresome. I mean shit, I know I don't suck too bad, but really. I am better then you, no you suck more, no you suck even more, no look you suck like a prison lady boy. Come on. It is time to just shut up and start having fun pushing plastic jerk faces around the table. As most know I am friends with all sorts of internet jerk faces. Heck I am one of them too. Passing whatever I consider tactics on a game that has a random factor in it. I can shout all I want about whatever army list is better, but when it comes down too it, whoever roll more 4+ usually wins. I just want people to just shut up and having fun playing the game.

Take this weekend, we had a hobby tournament and I took a nutty Space Wolves list that went for a highlander style of feel. Every unit different with as much of the Force Org covered with whatever nonsense I felt like taking. I took a few good units, but for the most part took stuff looking just to maximize the chance to have something cool happen. Here is the list and I ended up winning the event and had fun in every game.

HQ: Wolf Lord, Thunder Wolf, Saga of the Warrior, Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield, Runic Armor, Wolf Tail Talisman
HQ: Wolf Priest, Jump Pack, Runic Armor, Meltabombs
HQ: Rune Priest, Living Lightning, Murderous Hurricane
Elites: 5 Wolf Scouts, 2 X Plasma Pistol, Meltagun
Elites: Lone Wolf, Terminator Armor, Storm Shield, Chainfist, 2 X Fenris Wolves
Troops: 10 Grey Hunters, MoW, 2 X Meltaguns, Power Weapon, Rhino
Troops: 10 Grey Hunters, MoW, 2 X Flamers, Power Weapon, Rhino
Troops: 9 Bloodclaws, Powerfist, Rhino
FA: 10 Fenris Wolves
FA: 9 Sky Claws, Meltagun, MoW, Powerfist
Heavy: 6 Long Fangs, 2 Lascannons, 3 Heavy Bolters
Heavy: Vindicator, Siege Shield

Obviously this is not a power house list as there are some options are that are not the best. I probably should have gone with a Wolf Claw lord with that Saga or at least a Frost Weapon. I should know, as the lord only saw 4 rounds of combat in all the games. He was killed by Scorpion mandiblaster one game. Meganobz in another game. And Grey Knights with some Sisters help in another game.

The Long Fangs were not really that good, as they only had 2 long range weapons. I had a lot of fun with the Blood Claws and Sky Claws. They really pour out the pain when they got in there. The 2 Grey Hunter squads were my work horses as normally my Wolf Lord took the opponents attention for 2 turns and it set up my rhino full of Space Goats to get out and do some major damage. The Lone Wolf was pretty awesome as he took out a Killa Kan, an Avatar, and a Wraithlord for the weekend.

So what did I learn from all of this? Taking an unoptimized army made me work for my wins. I got lucky and didn't play anyone with a fully tuned list, but still each game was a challenge to pull out in the end. Lately games really have not been the best as you can easily see the outcome after turn 2 when playing with two highly tuned lists. These more mish mashed lists really give a hell of a lot more opportunity to do exciting things with otherwise "Ass" units. Heck sometimes you can find a little nugget of gold in these units.

So I don't know really what else to say beyond try playing for fun a bit more. I have won a whole lot and of course usually like winning to losing, but winning with tactics beats winning with list superiority.

My dick is bigger than yours, my tactics are better, hurrr!

It's some dumb shit and I don't see it ending any time soon unless some big change comes over some people.

I think tactics > list in any setting. In a "hobby" tournament lists should be on the same level (awesomely bad) so tactics and skill brings out the W's. In a competitive tournament ideally the same thing should happen (everyone brings good lists and the better player wins).

F*ckin' A, Goatboy, that is what I am talking about. I got sick of running the "power lists" for CSM and have been going nearly undefeated by running a mish-mash to every game. People just don't know what to do when the Dreadnought actually shoots them and the possessed own them in CC!

However, while you may not need the fine-tuned list, there is some basic list construction elements that are required to allow good tactics to be applied.

There is even a science to mish mash list construction.

I shouldn't think that my generalship is so good that if I bring a list without answers to mech, horde, or a combination, that I will win (not saying that winning is important).

But I can just as easily make a game not fun for my opponent by being the guy that brings the crap list that they walk over as the guy that brings the bomb.

It's cool when we can play others that do not put everything on the win. These are the kinds of people I look for when I am playtesting a new list to work out the bugs. You can have fun while learning & if you lose they will not lord it over you. Some people unfortunately have a major issue with losing and that's when the unfun starts to happen.

I am digging the Sky Claws lead by the Wolf Priest! It's a really cool unit and one you don't see often. Young pups are still pretty crazy & can forget that Space Wolves keep their boots on hte ground. They need the Wolf Priest to keep an eye on them and out of trouble. Of course they are looking for some so good luck & best wishes to the Priest. He's going to need it!

Well you are coming to BOLS so we can throw down in between beers :).

And yeah I have been really impressed of the Wolf Priest with Sky Claws. Charge in, 3 PW (Wolf Guard), and MoW gives you a ton of attacks, usually rerolling to hit and you can easily take a chunk out of a unit. If you are playing marines, you will probably not break them, meaning your next round gets you some more killing :). The bikes are not bad either, as extra attack bikes just helps out a lot too :). Plus my Goat bikes are looking sweet.

A game would be very cool ! I haven't decided yet if I will bring my Khornate daemons or new Blood Angels. I love me sum daemons but Gawd are they a real pain to transport through airports. I shipped them for Adepticon and had to basically re assemble the army in Chicago & then again when I got back home. I am seriously considering making all new Crushers when the plastic kits are released. As you aer probably aware Crushers don't travel well. The Bloodletters and Grinders on hte other hand are not a problem.

I am big into BA so the Sky Claws have a big appeal to me. Hte Wolf Priest is definitely the way to go! Preferred enemy is teh sickness & being fearless is always very beneficial IMO. The worst thing that can happen if is a jump unit breaks, falls back 3d6" and off the table... Oh noes not that sh@t again !! If you are really digging the Sky Claws then you might like the twinkly vampyres but I understand if werewolves are your thing. I like Blood Claws on bikes... The twin linked bolters & T5 can be very beneficial plus they always can charge the full 6" into DT. I had a really hot unit of Storm Claws bikers back in the day and they could always mess things up.

Take care! : )

My goats can be BA if need be. I have made enough cross over bits to ensure it. I like BA but they are a real glass jaw most of the time. I just find the Grey Hunters to be superior to assault troops. They just take a bunch of other things to make them good. And hell counter assault is awesome versus orks.

So far the Blood Claws have been good when I get them in. Mix it up with the Wolf priest and they can just get there.

I understand on daemons. It is just stupid to bring the metal jerks. I am redoing all my goat wolf lords to plastic when they come out. I just wish everything was in plastic with just single pose models being the only thing in metal. It is just stupid.

Of course for Adepticon we drove up so our models survived :).

Grey Hunters are definitely one of the best units in the new SW codex. I love to see people playing with big squads and bringing all the wolfy toys like hte standard and Mark of teh Wulfen. They work great in both rhinos & drop pods. You can take a full squad and add a Wolfguard if you pod them for the double melta unit plus the other good stuff.

I have been having lots of success with my new BA assault squads. I having been running 9 Marines with a Priest in a landraider. The bonus for dropping the jump packs to bring a cheaper transport is really nice & with a melta & two infernus pistols I am okay for close range tank busting. The Priest is a huge advantage over the last codex (PDF). with the landraider it's a very well rounded unit for sure.

Priests are good - I just run stuff that ignores them :). Wolf Lords do a good job of chopping up guys pretty good hahaha. Really I have found the 4 WL super assault list to be one of the meaner ones. It is an interesting rock/paper/scissors with a well defined IG list. Right now a good IG list is just very hard to beat when piloted by a good player. I think when Allies leave, IG will have a problem when dealing with Daemons as they can't stop the drop anymore. Same with other drop podding style armies like Nids etc.

But will see, I can always hope haha. I just hate allies as it takes away the armies weakness. Who else is coming down to Bolscon?

I think Shinkaze is coming as well as Paul Murphy & Rob Baer so there will be at least four of us there. I am teaming up with Shinkaze for the Friday event.

Yeah the 4x WL list is very solid & a good counter to IG. I am thinking IG is starting to dip a little on the power curve as there are some other good lists that are starting to appear that can hold their own against them. Marc did very well against guard with his orks at Bolter Beach last weekend.

See ya there !!

Awesome - I am teaming with Jawaballs for the team and then judging the rest of the time/drinking. I am Nick's 40k tournament helper as I don't mind yelling at people :).

Jon said I couldn't bring the list I originally thought up for teams so I have to think of something else. Looking like either double BA or SW/BA build. I just have to make the board this month :) and do some kind of mirror thing with my chaos army on one side as the lost group from the BA on the other probably.

Average rolls on the 4 WL list should do well. Assault lets you win big and those 4 guys are huge assault winners. They can deal with blob units as well as just about everything else. A swarmlord still sucks but hopefully the Long Fangs take it down fast enough :).

Here is the theme I am running with my new BA. they are a successor chapter called the Blood Saints. They figured out how to cure the red thirst and can control hte black rage. They have teh Shadow Company which is a dark mirror of themselves and is represented using Death Company. They aer real tough. I don't use Mephiston either. Don't get me wrong, Mephiston is hte bomb but not my style. I am currently still building the army & hopefully GMM can paint it up for me in time for BoLScon so I can bring it. Lots of highly dynamic poses to rep aerial combat.

Do ya like Wu Tang Clan by the way?

G

Thomas aka Goatboy said...

Of course. Got this cool remix of WuTang with the Beatles that is pretty fucking cool. ODB is on it.

Is Brandon making it down or can he not get out to Austin?

Terminus Est said...

As of now Brandon is not planning to attend unfortunately. I think Kenny Boucher is also coming which would be very awesome. Wu Tang sword style is a theme inherent to all my BA armies. : )

BTW have you ever noticed hte Sanguinor is a short lil fella? Still a BAMF though.

G

Thomas aka Goatboy said...

Yeah - it is and odd one. I think he is almost as good as mephiston, and in some ways a bit more annoying as he automatically flies. If he had fleet it would be worse, but still he is a pain in the butt :).

And I plan on making a goat version too hahah.

Awesome on Kenny showing up. Will have a good time in Austin.

Terminus Est said...

One theory on the Sanguinor is he is Azkelon (sp?), the first captain of the Sanguinary Guard who took command of the Blood Angels immediately following the death of their primarch Sanguinius. Now if that were true then he is one really old dude! I always find background like taht to be very interesting . It's just one theory though. Another is he is an avatar of Khorne much like the Skulltaker. Who knows ?? Do you read much of the Black Library novels?

G

Thomas aka Goatboy said...

It would be interesting and makes sense. I don't as I don't have a ton of time to read hehe. I read comics and then stuff for work. But I should find some time to throw down on Black Library books. Some are just meh haha.

One great fantasy novel is Blood for the Blood God. It's about a mortal version of the Skulltaker. That was my inspiration for my Khornate daemon army.
